How can Aspen be more special than it already is? Pour in the holiday cheer and the area becomes even more fun than it is the rest of the year. Now, this year, the Chamber of Commerce has compiled a wonderful calendar of the 12 Days of Christmas. This jam packed event calendar covers December 20-31, 2013. There are loads and load of things to do with the little ones including visits with Santa, meeting the reindeer, story hours, dog parties and much more. But we have culled all this activity down to a Top 10 List for all that spans the period and encourage you to not miss a single one.
#10 – JAS Cafe Downstairs at the Nell featuring Stacey Kent – 7 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. – Friday, Dec. 20
Intimate shows in the downstairs conference room at the Little Nell featuring jazz vocalist Stacey Kent. Kent along with husband Jim Tomilson on saxophone, perform a beguiling repertoire that ranges from jazz interpretations of the Great American Songbook to Brazilian bossa nova and French Chanson.
#9 – USPA World Snow Polo Championships – 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 21 – Wagner Park
World Class Polo players will be competing for the title at the 11th Annual USPA World Snow Polo Championship.
#8 – American Singer- Songwriter Burt Bacharach – 8 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 21 – Wheeler Opera House
Long recognized as one of the greatest and most sophisticated songwriting partners in musical history, Burt Bacharach’s career spans more than six decades and has featured writing partners as varied Hal David and Elvis Costello.
#7 – Ugly Sweater Party – 6 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 22 – The Little Nell Hotel
Live music and great prizes to the best (i.e. worst) holiday sweater, including a private table at Chair 9- the hotel’s new apres ski bar. All those wearing sweaters will receive a complimentary hot cider (with some jolly holiday rum for those over 21).
#6 – The Crystal Palace Revue – 5:30 p.m. & 8:30 p.m. – Wheeler Opera House
These masters of cabaret performance will rock your holiday with outrageous songs and silliness, and we’ll top it off with a champagne toast during intermission.
#5 – ACES Apres Ski: Holiday Open House – 3:30-6:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 26 – Aspen Center for Environmental Studies
Join us at Hallam Lake in the heart of downtown Aspen to enjoy Aspen Center for Environmental Studies during the holidays! ACES’ Boxing Day open house will include guided snowshoe tours around the preserve, crafts for kids, hot drinks, wine, snacks and more! Don’t miss the early evening “air show” of waterfowl coming to spend the night at Hallam Lake, explore the center, learn about ACES and enjoy the warmth of a small bonfire, the pleasure of good company and the beautiful setting of Hallam Lake!
#4 – FREE! Meet the Elk Mountain Rescue Dogs & Friends – 5:30-7:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 27 – The St. Regis Aspen Resort
Come to Santa’s Living Room (The Library) for a special visit with the Elk Mountain Rescue Dogs and Mountain Rescue Aspen volunteers. Learn how these talented are saving lives through back-country rescue and mountain safety education!
#3 – Aspen Art Museum Freestyle Winter Benefit – 4:30-7:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 28 – The St. Regis Aspen Resort
This no-holds-barred, fashion-forward event benefiting the AAM features champagne, caviar, amazing one-of-a-kind auction items, a fashion show and it sells out every-time . For tickets or further information, contact Aspen Art Museum at 970-925-8050.
#2 – The Audi Ajax Cup benefitting Aspen Valley Ski & Snowboard Club – 9:30 a.m., Monday, Dec. 30 – Aspen Mountain
Antonio Banderas will be hosting this year’s Audi Ajax Cup where teams compete head to head in a dual slalom race on the Little Nell run on Ajax.
#1 – Fireworks over Aspen Mountain – 8 p.m. & 12 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 31 – Aspen Mountain
Get ready to bring in the New Year with firework shows at both 8pm and 12am.
