In this installment, Kevin focuses on to popular summer rentals at the Chateau Roaring Fork that have been freshly renovated. – Units #8 and #30.

Located right on the river, the Chateau Roaring Fork condominiums are perfect for summer!

Located right on the Roaring Fork River, the Chateau Roaring Fork condominiums are one of the most popular summer rentals here at Frias Properties. Guests enjoy the views and sounds of the river, and also the peace and quiet of being in a quiet residential area while also being close to downtown Aspen and everything it offers. Just four blocks from downtown, guests also have the option of catching the free local bus, which picks up right outside the complex and has several stops downtown, including directly in front of the Silver Queen Gondola at Aspen Mountain.

Units at the Chateau Roaring Fork range from 1-4 bedrooms and are rated standard and deluxe. Complex amenities include an on-site heated pool and hot tubs, workout center, conference room, free Aspen airport transfers, free on-site parking and free wireless internet. Also, all Frias Properties of Aspen guests receive complimentary passes to the Aspen Club & Spa, the valley’s premier full-service spa and workout facility.

Or e-mail Reservations@FriasProperties.com for more info.

Today, we’re going to focus on two top-floor units – #8 and #30 – that are both great rental options.

Chateau Roaring Fork #8

Vaulted ceilings and plenty of living space at Chateau Roaring Fork #8.

This deluxe rated 3-bedroom, 2-bath condominium is a top floor unit with vaulted ceilings, a deck with grill and excellent river views. Located on the north end of the building, this condo features an updated kitchen with granite counter tops and a breakfast bar with bar stools. The living room has a sofa, love seat and two separate leather chairs – all around a flatscreen TV and wood-burning fireplace – making this unit very cozy and comfortable. There’s also a dining area that seats 6.

Outside on the deck is a gas barbecue grill and patio seating, offering indoor and outdoor dining options. Other amenities include a dishwasher and a washer/dryer.

The master bedroom has a king bed, flatscreen TV, sitting area and an en suite bathroom. Both guest bedrooms offer two twin beds each – so this unit sleeps 6!

Kevin’s comments: This unit would be perfect for anyone looking for plenty of living space along with all the traditional amenities of a chain hotel – and then some. The complex heated pool and hot tub, conference center, gym and sauna are located in the very next building – so guests who book Unit #8 do not have to go far! If you want to be close to everything, but still have some privacy, this unit could be for you!

Chateau Roaring Fork #30

This top floor corner unit has unobstructed river views!

This top floor corner unit is located on the south side of the complex, offering optimal, unobstructed views of the Roaring Fork River. With vaulted ceilings and sliding glass doors on the south and east side of the living area, this condominium is light and bright with plenty of sunshine! The open living area also features a leather sofa and two separate chairs, hardwood floors, a wood-burning fireplace, formal dining for 6, laundry closet, and an updated kitchen with granite counter tops. The outside deck offers great views, a sitting area and a barbecue gas grill.

The master bedrooms features a queen canopy bed, flatscreen TV and an en suite master bathroom. The first guest bedroom offers a queen-size bed and plush linens, while the second guest bedroom has a double set of twin bunk beds. This unit sleeps 8!

Kevin’s comments: An extremely popular unit, so book early! With windows and sliding doors on two sides of the living area, this condo is unique. It offers great views of the river from the top floor. Since it’s a top floor corner unit, guests can really feel secluded from everything and just enjoy the mountain views and sights and sounds of the Roaring Fork River. Just like Unit #8, guests of Chateau Roaring Fork #30 have full access to all of the amenities offered above. If you’re looking for a condominium that’s a perfect fit for kids, this may be it!

This week, Frias Properties staff photographer Kevin Burton continues his blog series called “Behind the Lens,” detailing recently photographed units managed by Frias Properties. In this installment, Kevin focuses on three popular rentals close to downtown Aspen – Aspen Mountain Townhouse B, Chateau Roaring Fork #31 and Fasching Haus #260.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been very busy catching up on photography for the website. Between current owners making improvements to existing inventory, plus adding new inventory, it keeps me hopping. So, lets take a few minutes to highlight some great properties offered for vacation rental in the Aspen downtown core.

Check out this sharp remodel at Aspen Mountain Townhouse B!

Aspen Mountain Townhouse B – FULL REMODEL! Wow! Spectacular, contemporary 3-bedroom, 3-bath standard townhouse only two blocks from Lift 1A and walking distance to downtown and the Silver Queen Gondola. Enjoy a prime location in the Galena Street Neighborhood, an area known for its convenience and quality. Open living and dining area with fireplace. Kitchen has new stainless appliances, dishwasher, laundry closet. Formal dining area. A light and bright unit!

Top floor master bedroom, two bedrooms on lower level. Flat screen TV in living area and all bedrooms.

Enjoy free Aspen airport transfers, free wireless internet and on-site free parking. Guests receive complimentary passes to the Aspen Club & Spa. (Passes to the Aspen Club & Spa can be obtained from any Frias Properties front desk during regular business hours.)

Kevin’s notes: Much improved, yet still affordable, unit. Everything is new and fresh. Very contemporary feel. Excellent location for summer or winter. Easy (walking) access to historic Lift 1A, the Silver Queen Gondola and downtown. You can walk everywhere! This condominium is priced right (value!) and would be great for a young family with slightly older children (age 8+) that wouldn’t mind sleeping alone on the lower level. The upper level master is open and roomy, and has a great window with blinds that can open or close electronically. Kitchen has stainless appliances and a dishwasher, so it’s great for cooking and entertaining.

This is quickly becoming one of the more popular units that we offer at Frias Properties!

With a stone wood-burning fireplace and a large flat screen TV, Chateau Roaring Fork #31 is a popular rental for guests.

Chateau Roaring Fork #31 – NEW INVENTORY! Near the river! Comfortable with plenty of space, this 2-bedroom, 2-bath standard condominium is only four blocks from the gondola and is even closer to downtown Aspen. Enjoy the sounds of the nearby Roaring Fork River. The free local bus route, with access to all four ski mountains, is located right outside. Amenities include a stone wood-burning fireplace and flat screen TV in the main living area and an updated kitchen with granite counter tops. Include washer/dryer and dishwasher.

Complex amenities at the Chateau Roaring Fork include an on-site heated pool and hot tubs, workout center, conference room, free Aspen airport transfers, free on-site parking, free wireless internet, and complimentary passes to the Aspen Club & Spa.

Kevin’s notes: Another great place for a family, as it has two twins in the guest bedroom. If you enjoy the river, this is your place. Located near the majestic Roaring Fork River, this unit offers easy access to many of the excellent hiking and biking trails nearby. Perfect location – close to everything but allows for peace, quiet and serenity. The stone fireplace in the living area would be great to gather around after a long day of outdoor adventure, and there’s even a large flat screen TV in the living area to help you unwind. This unit is great in the summer, but also affordable in the winter! The free bus right outside makes it easy to get anywhere, including all four ski mountains – Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highland, Buttermilk and Snowmass. Also, consider Chateau Roaring Fork for your group or family gathering, as it has its own 1,100-square-foot conference room with a heated pool, hot tubs and fitness center.

Fly-fishing in Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley is a hugely popular activity, both with locals and vacationers alike. Those who take to the local waters – namely the Frying Pan River and the Roaring Fork River – have the opportunity to catch a lot of trout, primarily brown and rainbow. Up in the high country, expect to reel in some cutthroat or brook trout. Also lurking in the waters of the Roaring Fork River are some massive white fish and sucker fish.

A while back, we spoke with Frias Properties owner services manager Cameron Murray about his passion for fly-fishing. To read that blog, CLICK HERE.

Frias Properties owner services manager Cameron Murray works the waters of Snowmass Lake. Cameron has been fly-fishing for 7 years.

Cameron is our resident fly-fishing guru. This week our blog team caught up with Cameron to ask him a few new questions. We also asked him to “tackle” (pun intended) a big request we had: Put together the ultimate fly-fishing vacation.

Q: How long have you been fly-fishing?
A: “Fly fishing [for] seven years; fishing for around 30 years.”

Q: You have an unlimited budget and you want to plan that dream fly-fishing getaway to Aspen. When do you come, and how long do you stay?
A: “The fly-fishing here is great year round. I am a dry fly junkie, so would recommend the late summer for the most top water action. People come around the world for the famous green drake hatch, going anywhere from early July to early September, depending on water conditions. The fishing is great all year, though, and I can’t emphasize that enough. I went fishing on the Frying Pan the other day. It was around 10 degrees and I caught 15+ fish just fishing for a couple of hours.”

Q: Where would you stay?
A: “Depends on where in the valley you want to fish. There is amazing fishing from Independence Pass to Glenwood Springs, so you need to make your decision based on where you will be spending most of your time.

Q: OK, let’s get real. You DON’T have an unlimited budget. Give us some affordable lodging options that are close to where I can fish.
A: “I would stay at one of Frias’ properties that is located DIRECTLY on the Roaring Fork River: Chateau Roaring Fork, Chateau Eau Claire.” [Click link to view units]

Q: I’m just going to fish, mostly. What amenities should I look for when booking my lodging?
A: “Access to the river, access to a good fly shop.”

Q: How do I get to the rivers? Take the bus? Rent a car?
A: I recommend a car without a doubt. Most river access points don’t have bus stops.” [CLICK HERE for transportation options]

Q: Should I hire a guide or just wing it?
A: “If you aren’t familiar with the area or new to fly-fishing I would recommend a guide. If you are a seasoned fisherman you could probably just go and talk to the guys at the local fly shop and they will put you on some good spots.”

Q: Do I need to bring my own gear, or should I rent?
A: “How long will you be fishing? If a couple of days and you are never going to go again, maybe rent. Otherwise I would buy.”

Q: Do I need a license?
A: “Yes.”

Q: Is it catch-and-release or can I eat ‘em?
A: “Primarily catch and release on the Roaring Fork. On the Frying Pan, you can keep two brown trout under 14 inches once you are past the bridge by the dam. You can keep as many whitefish as you want. If you are fishing in the high country you can keep just about anything. I never keep fish so am not 100% certain, you can always call the local fish and game department for details.”

Q: Is the water cold?
A: “Yes, upper 30s to low 40s year round.”

We asked Cameron to divulge all of his favorite fishing spots in a detailed list with directions and lure suggestions. In true fisherman style, he graciously declined. But, he’s always available to discuss fly-fishing or the benefits of having Frias Properties as your property management company.

To contact Cameron, e-mail Cameron@FriasProperties.com or call (970) 429-2435.

Aspen, Colorado, definitely has its allure during the winter months, but each year more and more guests are flocking to this small mountain town during the warm weather months – mainly due to the exceptional climate as well as the vast number of outdoor activities available. The list of summer activities is endless, offering everything from horseback riding to bird watching to whitewater rafting. So how do you weed through all these options and plan the perfect family or couples summer vacation?

There’s plenty to do in Aspen, Colorado, during the summer.

This week, our blog team recruited Frias Properties reservations manager Jennifer Steele to help us plan one spectacular (and surely memorable) summer getaway, complete with lodging options and plenty of things to do! Below, Jen answers a few of our questions.

Q: I’m hoping you can help me plan the perfect Aspen vacation. Let’s go wild – I have a fairly open budget. What’s the first thing I need to know?
Jennifer: “I would recommend to bring your active gear and romp around natures playground as much as possible. Summer activities are endless: horseback, rafting, hiking the Maroon Bells, local Aspen terrain and Independence Pass views are breathtaking.”

Q: When should I plan to come? I’m pretty open and would like to see some cool activities.
Jennifer: “Aspen hosts many different exciting events and festivals throughout the year.”

Q: Should I fly in to Aspen or to Denver? Or somewhere else?
Jennifer: “Aspen is the easiest airport to fly into. However, some other great options are Eagle, CO (1.5hr), Grand Junction, CO (2hr), and Denver (3-3.5 hr). If you fly into Denver you can arrange transportation to and from the airport through Colorado Mountain Express.” (For airport information, CLICK HERE. For transportation information, CLICK HERE.)

Q: What if I drive to Aspen? Is there parking?
Jennifer: “Yes, you can park just outside of the downtown walking. You are welcome to part with a permit. Downtown parking is available by the hour.”

Q: Do I really need a car?
Jennifer: “You do not need a car as Aspen is only 5 blocks from one end of town to the other, and has a great FREE local shuttle bus. However, summer is a great time to explore local scenery and nearby towns. You don’t need a car, but if you happen to have a car with you, I would recommend some of these attractions: Ride up Independence Pass to the old mining town, Grottos and Continental Divide; Glenwood Springs has the famous Hot Springs pool; enjoy a ducky ride down the Colorado river; or rent a bike to cruise the Colorado bike path traveling along the river; visit the town of Redstone for lunch.”

The Ritz-Carlton Club at Aspen Highland offers luxury accommodations.

Q: What are your Top 3 SUMMER lodging choices? Remember, I got a fairly open budget. (Click links to view units.)
Jennifer: “I would recommend the luxury – Ritz-Carlton Club, Hyatt Grand Aspen, St. Regis Residence Club. Condominiums options along the Roaring Fork river are amazing, and the Galena neighborhood as well.” (To view all condominiums, CLICK HERE.)

Q: What are the perks of booking “luxury?”
Jennifer: “Some amazing amenities included in our luxury residence club packages are : Spas and heath club on site; “Kidz Game Room” on site; on-site pool and Jacuzzi; five star services; and around town transportation.”

Q: What are a few really elitist things I can do in Aspen?
Jennifer: “Visit the Caribou Club, a local unique fine dining experience; paraglide through the mountains; raft the Colorado River; and hike a ’14er;’ or head over to Crested Butte during wildflower season (spring).”

Q: Where can I eat?
Jennifer: “Contact our Concierge@FriasProperties.com or call (970) 925-7505 for a list of amazing Aspen restaurants.”

Q: Where can I score some high-brow Scotch?
Jennifer: “The Grog Shop is a great downtown location next to our local grocery store City Market! One stop shop.”

Q: OK, what should I splurge on?
Jennifer: “Our local shops have all the latest fashion trends for your enjoyment. I would recommend to pack light and bring home a piece of Aspen with you. Winter fun – Enjoy the exciting new colorful snow gear Aspen has to offer. Summer fun – Definitely hit up the locals farmers markets for great Aspen local gifts for friends and family.”

Thanks for the great recommendations! Like Jennifer said, if you have any questions about summer planning, call our concierge desk at (970) 925-9075. For booking information and assistance planning your Aspen getaway, call one of our vacation specialists (like Julie!) right now at (800) 633-0336.

Think of Aspen, Colorado, and surely a few vivid images come to mind: the mountains, skiing, and (of course) that notorious upper-crust reputation, just to name a few. From Hunter S. Thompson to that “Dumb and Dumber” movie to the “Aspen Secrets” reality show on VH-1, this small mountain town rarely runs short on characters … or stereotypes.

But seriously, is that all that Aspen is? An exclusive rich man’s getaway with wealthy ski-bunny debutantes around every corner? Ask any local and they’ll set you straight. While Aspen does sport its share of ski bunnies, the high-brow attitudes (and price tags) are a thing of the past, and more young couples and families are flocking to Aspen than ever before – both for vacation pleasures and for permanent residency.

Think you know all there is to know about Aspen? Think again.

So what makes Aspen such an attractive draw? We’ve covered what you already know – the mountains, the skiing, the snow bunnies – but what about what you don’t know? This week, our blog team breaks down a few of the lesser-known facts about Aspen, Colorado. Take a look at these hidden gems of Aspen, and you’ll quickly discover why so many people want to spend more and more time here.

Aspen is a cultural and intellectual Mecca, offering art, music, lectures and seminars year round. Annual events such as the Aspen Ideas Festival bring social and civic leaders from around the world to Aspen to share ideas and information. Past guests have included a number of heads of state, as well as Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th and current Dalai Lama. The renown Aspen Institute offers local seminars and presentations, as well as offering young-leader fellowships around the globe. Built in 1889, the historic Wheeler Opera House is also a popular cultural stop, offering a number of concerts and shows throughout the year. For a calendar of events, CLICK HERE.

Aspen has more national designated wilderness area surrounding our valley than anywhere in Colorado. Aspen is surrounded by the White River National Forest, providing a beautiful natural landscape that brings visitors from around the world. There is no shortage of hiking and biking trails in and around Aspen. Maroon Bells consists of two peaks – Maroon Peak and North Maroon Peak – in the Elk Mountain range, about 10 miles outside of Aspen. Only accessible during the summer months, guests flock to “The Bells” for biking, hiking and sightseeing. Many say Maroon Bells is one of the most photographed spots in North America because of its natural beauty, especially during the “fall colors turn.” For hiking and biking info, CLICK HERE.

The Aspen Music Festival offers world-class classical music performances by up-and-coming and renown artists and composers. The Aspen Music Festival offers an eight-week summer festival with more than 300 events, including opera, orchestral concerts, contemporary music, symposiums, lectures and kids’ programs. The 2000-seat Benedict Music Tent is a popular spot in the summer, when art, ideas, beauty and music all intersect. Harris Concert Hall also offers a fine selection of performances. Many events are free of charge. Lawn seating is always free at outdoor performances.

Aspen has more deed-restricted employee housing in our city and county per capita than anywhere and this helps ensure a stable work force. Stable and affordable housing for Aspen’s workforce ensures a stable economy and keeps our locals very busy. Aspen offers a low unemployment rate and a high starting salary for its residents. The local real estate market also thrives.

Aspen High School was rated the top Colorado school in 2012. Aspen High School came in No. 1 (and the 59th highest-rated high school in the nation) according to a 2012 ranking complied by U.S. news & World Report, a national news magazine. The ranking, called the “U.S. News Best High Schools” placed Aspen above much larger schools in Colorado Springs and Denver, as well as many academic and charter schools. The Independence Square hotel offers location and convenience in the heart of downtown Aspen.

For years, Aspen, Colorado, has had a reputation as being “expensive,” and that regular people just don’t fit in – or can’t afford to fit in. That pervasive stigma may have been true at one point (many, many years ago), but today’s Aspen is filled with everyone from youthful snowboarders to new families with small children to retired couples looking to get away. Today, our blog team breaks down exactly how to plan an affordable getaway to Aspen.

To help us plan the perfect Aspen getaway on an affordable budget, we recruited Frias Properties vacation specialist Andrew Myatt to help us out. Andrew has been with the company for many years and is a long-time local as well as an accomplished recreational skier and professional deal seeker!

To see a video of Andrew on the slopes, CLICK HERE. To read more about Andrew’s skiing recommendations, CLICK HERE. Below, Andrew shares some of his local insights with our blog readers about how to plan that perfect Aspen getaway.

Q: I’m hoping you can help us plan an affordable Aspen vacation. We are on a somewhat limited budget, but really want to come to Aspen and check it out. What’s the first thing I need to know?
A: “[Whether] you plan ahead or last-minute, there are great deals to be had at every time of the year.”

Q: When should we plan to come? We are pretty open as long as it’s not super expensive.
A: “Early season, before Christmas, is very affordable and in the end of March/early April for the ski season. The end of May and early June as well as September are great times to save money in the summer season.”

Q: Should we fly in to Aspen or to Denver? Or somewhere else?
A: “Denver is the cheapest for flights, but once you get the rental car or the shuttle it might be easiest to fly direct [to Aspen] and not rent a car. Rental cars are an expense you can easily cut out.”

Q: What if we drive to Aspen? Is there parking?
A: “Most of our complexes have off-street parking, but parking in Aspen can be a challenge.”

Q: Do we really need a car?
A: “No.”

Q: What are your Top 3 SUMMER lodging choices? Remember, we are on a limited budget. (Click links to view property. Link will open in a new window.)
A: “Silverglo is always a good option, the Chateau Chaumont or Chateau Dumont during the summer are inexpensive. Also, the Independence Square is always affordable.

Q: What are your Top 3 WINTER choices?
A: “Silverglo, Chateau Roaring Fork and Chateau Eau Claire, and Independence Square.”

Q: We see that almost all your lodging comes with a full kitchen. Why? Most hotels I stay at do not. We assume we can use the kitchen and all the dishes? Cooking at “home” could save us money.
A: “Yes all of our condos have full kitchens and come fully stocked. Great way to save money, eating in.”

Q: What are a few FREE things we can do in Aspen?
A: “Hike, bike, sit outside the Music Tent, fly a kite, read a book, go to the skate park.”

Q: What’s the best (and cheapest) way to get in a day of skiing or snowboarding?
A: “Hike up to the upper part of Highlands, or know someone that has a premier pass and get one of their 50% off discounts.”

Q: Where can we eat inexpensively?
A: “In your condo, or at NY Pizza, or at any bar menu in town.”

Q: Where can we score a cheap brewski?
A: “Little Annie’s and most places during happy hour.”

There’s plenty to do in this small mountain community, and one thing you’ll never run short on is options. This week, our blog team sits downs with a few staffers at the Frias main vacation rentals office, 730 E. Kevin Burton (Frias web marketing manager): “Hickory House.”
Kristi Gray (Silverglo front desk manager): “My favorite place to get dinner in Aspen is Pinons. A steakhouse with a variety of traditional American dishes to choose from including chicken, steak, fish, and pasta you can’t go wrong! A little on the higher end, this is a great spot for a special occasion. Pinons provides a welcoming atmosphere and a great patio overlooking town in the summer.”
Lynn Armstrong (Frias guest services manager): “NY Pizza or 520 Grill for faster meals, Jimmy’s for sit-down meals.”

Q: What do you recommend to eat there?
Jenny: “Mussles, Tofu curry, chicken pate; entire bar menu is GREAT.”
Kevin: “Ink! Coffee. Try a ‘Black & White.’”
Lynn: “Poppycock’s or BB’s Kitchen.”

Q: What local restaurant has the best value?
Kevin: “La Cantina. Affordable full meals.”
Kristi: “Jimmy’s bar menu provides a different entrée each night (Monday through Thursday??) for only $15. It is a great meal and a good time that doesn’t break the bank.”
Lisa Jennings (Frias group sales manager): “Justice Snow for food.”
Lynn: “Jimmy’s.”

Q: Where’s the best place to bust a move, cut a rug, or do the Dougie?
Jenny: “I like doin’ the Dougie in the comfort of my own living room.”
Kevin: “The Belly Up during a great concert!”
Lisa: “Depending on the show, Belly Up, or the Regal.”
Lynn: “Escobar.”

Q: It’s 6 p.m. on Friday night. What should I be doing?
Jenny: “Shot and a beer $3.50 at Little Annie’s.”
Kevin: “Making dinner reservations for later. Try Jimmy’s (American) or Cache Cache (French).”
Lisa: “39 Degrees at the Sky Hotel.”
Lynn: “Happy Hour at La Cantina or Su Casa.”

Q: Where should I be when the clock strikes midnight?
Kevin: “Grab a slice at NY Pizza. They’re open late.”
Lynn: “At a show at the Belly Up.”

Q: Give me a tip for X Games weekend.
Kevin: “Take the free bus to Buttermilk! It’s a 5 minute ride and there’s no parking out there anyway.”
Kristi: “There are Jeeps parked up towards the St .Regis, which will take you to the X Games for free all weekend after you fill out a quick survey regarding your dream Jeep. They will pick you up as well and this is a great way to avoid the long bus lines. Also going to watch the practice as opposed to the games themselves help avoid crowds and provide much better viewing.”
Lisa: “Get yourself into the private parties.”

Q: Give me a tip for Christmas/New Years.
Kevin: “Make reservations early. Plan early. Do everything early.”
Kristi: “Be sure to make a reservation way in advance for wherever you would like to go. Things book very quickly this time of year.”
Lisa: “Find a good house party.”
Lynn: “If you have kids, the 12 Days of Christmas has many fun family activities including meeting Santa and his reindeer. Make sure to catch both the 8 p.m. and the midnight fireworks!”

Q: Ever use a local cab service? How was that?
Jenny: “925-TAXI. They sometimes take a bit to get there if it is 2 a.m. Everyone’s trying to get a lift home.”
Kevin: “No. I live in town so I walk everywhere!”
Lynn: “Our guests like High Mountain Taxi.”

Q: Ever use the local bus? What’s that like at 2 a.m.?
Jenny: “Loud and obnoxious.”
Kevin: “You can’t beat the free bus.”
Kristi: “The bus is a great resource and very easy to use. The drivers are very willing to help you figure out how to get where you need to be. Be prepared for a rowdy ride if you are taking the 2 a.m.”
Lynn: “The buses are wonderful and reliable, although I’d rather not be on one at 2 a.m.”
