Chateau Roaring Fork #8

Vaulted ceilings and plenty of living space at Chateau Roaring Fork #8.

This deluxe rated 3-bedroom, 2-bath condominium is a top floor unit with vaulted ceilings, a deck with grill and excellent river views. Located on the north end of the building, this condo features an updated kitchen with granite counter tops and a breakfast bar with bar stools. The living room has a sofa, love seat and two separate leather chairs – all around a flatscreen TV and wood-burning fireplace – making this unit very cozy and comfortable. There’s also a dining area that seats 6.

Outside on the deck is a gas barbecue grill and patio seating, offering indoor and outdoor dining options. Other amenities include a dishwasher and a washer/dryer.

This top floor corner unit is located on the south side of the complex, offering optimal, unobstructed views of the Roaring Fork River. With vaulted ceilings and sliding glass doors on the south and east side of the living area, this condominium is light and bright with plenty of sunshine! The open living area also features a leather sofa and two separate chairs, hardwood floors, a wood-burning fireplace, formal dining for 6, laundry closet, and an updated kitchen with granite counter tops. The outside deck offers great views, a sitting area and a barbecue gas grill.

This condominium is priced right (value!) and would be great for a young family with slightly older children (age 8+) that wouldn’t mind sleeping alone on the lower level. The upper level master is open and roomy, and has a great window with blinds that can open or close electronically. Kitchen has stainless appliances and a dishwasher, so it’s great for cooking and entertaining.

Frias Properties owner services manager Cameron Murray works the waters of Snowmass Lake. Cameron has been fly-fishing for 7 years.

Cameron is our resident fly-fishing guru. This week our blog team caught up with Cameron to ask him a few new questions. We also asked him to “tackle” (pun intended) a big request we had: Put together the ultimate fly-fishing vacation.

Q: How long have you been fly-fishing?
A: “Fly fishing [for] seven years; fishing for around 30 years.”

Q: You have an unlimited budget and you want to plan that dream fly-fishing getaway to Aspen. When do you come, and how long do you stay?
A: “The fly-fishing here is great year round. I am a dry fly junkie, so would recommend the late summer for the most top water action. People come around the world for the famous green drake hatch, going anywhere from early July to early September, depending on water conditions. The fishing is great all year, though, and I can’t emphasize that enough. I went fishing on the Frying Pan the other day. It was around 10 degrees and I caught 15+ fish just fishing for a couple of hours.”

Q: Where would you stay?
A: “Depends on where in the valley you want to fish. There is amazing fishing from Independence Pass to Glenwood Springs, so you need to make your decision based on where you will be spending most of your time.

Q: OK, let’s get real. You DON’T have an unlimited budget. Give us some affordable lodging options that are close to where I can fish.
A: “I would stay at one of Frias’ properties that is located DIRECTLY on the Roaring Fork River: Chateau Roaring Fork, Chateau Eau Claire.” [Click link to view units]

Q: I’m just going to fish, mostly. What amenities should I look for when booking my lodging?
A: “Access to the river, access to a good fly shop.”

Q:  How do I get to the rivers? Take the bus? Rent a car?
A: I recommend a car without a doubt. Most river access points don’t have bus stops.” [CLICK HERE for transportation options]

Q: Should I hire a guide or just wing it?
A: “If you aren’t familiar with the area or new to fly-fishing I would recommend a guide. If you are a seasoned fisherman you could probably just go and talk to the guys at the local fly shop and they will put you on some good spots.”

Q: Do I need to bring my own gear, or should I rent?
A: “How long will you be fishing? If a couple of days and you are never going to go again, maybe rent. Otherwise I would buy.”

Q: Do I need a license?
A: “Yes.”

Q: Is it catch-and-release or can I eat ‘em?
A: “Primarily catch and release on the Roaring Fork. On the Frying Pan, you can keep two brown trout under 14 inches once you are past the bridge by the dam. You can keep as many whitefish as you want. If you are fishing in the high country you can keep just about anything. I never keep fish so am not 100% certain, you can always call the local fish and game department for details.”

Q: Is the water cold?
A: “Yes, upper 30s to low 40s year round.”

This week, our blog team recruited Frias Properties reservations manager Jennifer Steele to help us plan one spectacular (and surely memorable) summer getaway, complete with lodging options and plenty of things to do! Below, Jen answers a few of our questions.

Q: I’m hoping you can help me plan the perfect Aspen vacation. Let’s go wild – I have a fairly open budget. What’s the first thing I need to know?
Jennifer: “I would recommend to bring your active gear and romp around natures playground as much as possible. Summer activities are endless: horseback, rafting, hiking the Maroon Bells, local Aspen terrain and Independence Pass views are breathtaking.”

Q: When should I plan to come? I’m pretty open and would like to see some cool activities.
Jennifer: “Aspen hosts many different exciting events and festivals throughout the year.”

Q: Should I fly in to Aspen or to Denver? Or somewhere else?
Jennifer: “Aspen is the easiest airport to fly into. However, some other great options are Eagle, CO (1.5hr), Grand Junction, CO (2hr), and Denver (3-3.5 hr). Q: What if I drive to Aspen? Is there parking?
Jennifer: “Yes, you can park just outside of the downtown walking. You are welcome to part with a permit. Downtown parking is available by the hour.” 

Q: Do I really need a car?
Jennifer: “You do not need a car as Aspen is only 5 blocks from one end of town to the other, and has a great FREE local shuttle bus. However, summer is a great time to explore local scenery and nearby towns. You don’t need a car, but if you happen to have a car with you, I would recommend some of these attractions: Ride up Independence Pass to the old mining town, Grottos and Continental Divide; Glenwood Springs has the famous Hot Springs pool; enjoy a ducky ride down the Colorado river; or rent a bike to cruise the Colorado bike path traveling along the river; visit the town of Redstone for lunch.”

Q: Help us plan our perfect honeymoon. How many days should we plan?
A: “To receive the full Aspen experience and [to take in] all of the activities, I would say a week.”

Q: What’s the difference between flying in to Aspen or flying in to Denver? What do we need to know?
A: “All of our condominiums at Frias Properties include free transportation to and from Aspen airport, thus, making it very convenient and easy.  There is no need to rent a car once you are in the town of Aspen.  We have extremely efficient free public transportation.  Flying from Denver can save on cost and it is a beautiful drive.  In the winter, you do need to be mindful of the sometimes treacherous conditions.”

Q: What’s your Top 3 SUMMER lodging recommendations for newlyweds?
A: The Chateau Roaring Fork and Chateau Eau Claire offer patios with beautiful views of the Roaring Fork River. The Hyatt Grand Aspen is located in the heart of downtown Aspen. The Chateau Chaumont and Chateau Dumont complexes are at the base of the gondola and offer direct access to all of Aspen’s restaurants.” [Click links to view properties.]

Q: What’s your Top 3 WINTER lodging recommendations for honeymoons?
A: “[1]The Fasching Haus offers fantastic on-site service. [2] The Ritz-Carlton Club at Aspen Highlands is ski-in ski-out located at the base of Highlands. [3] The Independence Square hotel is a bed and breakfast located in the heart of downtown Aspen.”

Q: Is location important? We want to be close to everything, but we also want our privacy!
A: “Yes, you are in luck because everything in downtown Aspen is within walking distance!”

Q: We need help booking dinner reservations and whatnot. Do you do that?

Q: What SUMMER activities would you recommend? Anything fun … or romantic?
A: “Hiking – definitely go up to Maroon Bells!  Horseback riding, rafting, Jeeping, fly-fishing, hot-air ballooning.  There are endless opportunities in Aspen!”

Q: What WINTER activities would you recommend?
A: “Skiing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and visiting all of Aspen’s fantastic restaurants.”

Q: What’s the one thing in Aspen we should not miss?
A: “A ride up the Aspen gondola to take in the picturesque views of the town and scenery.”

Q: I’m hoping you can help us plan an affordable Aspen vacation. We are on a somewhat limited budget, but really want to come to Aspen and check it out. What’s the first thing I need to know?
A: “[Whether] you plan ahead or last-minute, there are great deals to be had at every time of the year.”

Q: When should we plan to come? We are pretty open as long as it’s not super expensive.
A: “Early season, before Christmas, is very affordable and in the end of March/early April for the ski season.  The end of May and early June as well as September are great times to save money in the summer season.”

Q: Should we fly in to Aspen or to Denver? Or somewhere else?
A: “Denver is the cheapest for flights, but once you get the rental car or the shuttle it might be easiest to fly direct [to Aspen] and not rent a car.  Rental cars are an expense you can easily cut out.”

Q: What if we drive to Aspen? Is there parking?
A: “Most of our complexes have off-street parking, but parking in Aspen can be a challenge.”

Q: Do we really need a car?
A: “No.”

A: “Silverglo is always a good option, the Chateau Chaumont or Chateau Dumont during the summer are inexpensive.  Also, the Independence Square is always affordable.

Q: What are your Top 3 WINTER choices?
A: “Silverglo, Chateau Roaring Fork and Chateau Eau Claire, and Independence Square.”

Q: We see that almost all your lodging comes with a full kitchen. Why? Most hotels I stay at do not. We assume we can use the kitchen and all the dishes? Cooking at “home” could save us money.
A: “Yes all of our condos have full kitchens and come fully stocked.  Great way to save money, eating in.”

Q: What are a few FREE things we can do in Aspen?
A: “Hike, bike, sit outside the Music Tent, fly a kite, read a book, go to the skate park.”

Q: What’s the best (and cheapest) way to get in a day of skiing or snowboarding?
A: “Hike up to the upper part of Highlands, or know someone that has a premier pass and get one of their 50% off discounts.”

Q: Where can we eat inexpensively?
A: “In your condo, or at NY Pizza, or at any bar menu in town.”

Q: Where can we score a cheap brewski?
A: “Little Annie’s and most places during happy hour.”

Kristi Gray (Silverglo front desk manager): “My favorite place to get dinner in Aspen is Pinons.  A steakhouse with a variety of traditional American dishes to choose from including chicken, steak, fish, and pasta you can’t go wrong!  A little on the higher end, this is a great spot for a special occasion.  Pinons provides a welcoming atmosphere and a great patio overlooking town in the summer.”
Lynn Armstrong (Frias guest services manager): “NY Pizza or 520 Grill for faster meals, Jimmy’s for sit-down meals.”

Q: What do you recommend to eat there?
Jenny: “Mussles, Tofu curry, chicken pate; entire bar menu is GREAT.”
Kevin: “Ribs.”
Kristi: “I recommend the freddy salad and the filet mignon.”
Lynn: “NY Pizza – cheese slice. 520 Grill – buffalo burger and fries. Jimmy’s – beef porterhouse for two.”

 Q: Any good breakfast spots?
Jenny: “Main Street Bakery.”
Kevin: “Ink! Coffee. Try a ‘Black & White.’”
Lynn: “Poppycock’s or BB’s Kitchen.”

Q: What local restaurant has the best value?
Kevin: “La Cantina. Affordable full meals.”
Kristi: “Jimmy’s bar menu provides a different entrée each night (Monday through Thursday??) for only $15.  It is a great meal and a good time that doesn’t break the bank.”

Lynn: “Jimmy’s.”

Q: Where’s your favorite place for après-ski in Aspen?
Jenny: “Mezzuluna. Good specials, not overly crowded, bar and outside seating.  GREAT pizzas.”
Kevin: “Happy hour at Su Casa.”
Kristi: “39 Degrees at the Sky hotel is a great time for après-ski .  Friendly bartenders, ski movies playing, and music you cant help but finding yourself move to are only a few of the things 39 Degrees has to offer.”

Q: What’s your favorite bar in Aspen?
Kevin: “Aspen Brewing Company. Great local craft brews.”
Lisa: “The Red Onion.”
Lynn: “Aspen Brewery and Finbarr’s.”

Q: What do you typically order at a bar?
Jenny: “Gin.”
Kevin: “Beer or whiskey.”
Lisa: “Ketel soda.”
Lynn: “Champagne or beer.”

Q: What’s the atmosphere/crowd like at your favorite bar?
Jenny: “Bar seating or tables.  Laid back.  Casual.”
Kevin: “Casual. Live music nights are great!”
Lisa: “Relaxed, mostly locals.”
Lynn: “Busy (but not too busy) … but friendly.”

Q: Where’s the best place to bust a move, cut a rug, or do the Dougie?
Jenny: “I like doin’ the Dougie in the comfort of my own living room.”
Kevin: “The Belly Up during a great concert!”
Lisa: “Depending on the show, Belly Up, or the Regal.”
Lynn: “Escobar.”

Q: It’s 6 p.m. on Friday night. What should I be doing?
Jenny: “Shot and a beer $3.50 at Little Annie’s.”
Kevin: “Making dinner reservations for later. Try Jimmy’s (American) or Cache Cache (French).”
Lisa: “39 Degrees at the Sky Hotel.”
Lynn: “Happy Hour at La Cantina or Su Casa.”

Q: It’s 9 p.m. on Saturday night. What should I be doing?
Kevin: “Heading to the Belly Up for a show.”
Lisa: “Eric’s Bar.”
Lynn: “Bar hopping on the mall.”

Q: Where should I be when the clock strikes midnight?
Kevin: “Grab a slice at NY Pizza. They’re open late.”
Lynn: “At a show at the Belly Up.”

Q: Give me a tip for X Games weekend.
Kevin: “Take the free bus to Buttermilk! It’s a 5 minute ride and there’s no parking out there anyway.”
Kristi: “There are Jeeps parked up towards the St .Regis, which will take you to the X Games for free all weekend after you fill out a quick survey regarding your dream Jeep.  They will pick you up as well and this is a great way to avoid the long bus lines.  Also going to watch the practice as opposed to the games themselves help avoid crowds and provide much better viewing.”
Lisa: “Get yourself into the private parties.”

Q: Give me a tip for Christmas/New Years.
Kevin: “Make reservations early. Plan early. Do everything early.”
Kristi: “Be sure to make a reservation way in advance for wherever you would like to go.  Things book very quickly this time of year.”
Lisa: “Find a good house party.”
Lynn: “If you have kids, the 12 Days of Christmas has many fun family activities including meeting Santa and his reindeer. Make sure to catch both the 8 p.m. and the midnight fireworks!”

Q: Ever use a local cab service? How was that?
Jenny: “925-TAXI. They sometimes take a bit to get there if it is 2 a.m.  Everyone’s trying to get a lift home.”
Kevin: “No. I live in town so I walk everywhere!”
Lynn: “Our guests like High Mountain Taxi.”

Q: Ever use the local bus? What’s that like at 2 a.m.?
Jenny: “Loud and obnoxious.”
Kevin: “You can’t beat the free bus.”
Kristi: “The bus is a great resource and very easy to use.  The drivers are very willing to help you figure out how to get where you need to be.  Be prepared for a rowdy ride if you are taking the 2 a.m.”
Lynn: “The buses are wonderful and reliable, although I’d rather not be on one at 2 a.m.”
