Already planning that Aspen getaway this summer? And the summer of 2014 in Aspen might be the best yet – with a slew of events scheduled throughout the season. This week, our blog team presents our Summer 2014 Preview: Arts and Music. In Aspen, the locals like to say, “We came for the winter … and stayed for the summer!” Below, we break down all of the can’t-miss events for 2014.

We’ve already covered the Top 5 Cultural Experiences in Aspen That You Don’t Want to Miss (a two-part series) as well as Music Abounds in Aspen (a two-part series), so this week we will focus primarily on the 2014 events.

Aspen Summer Words 2014 – June 13-18 at the Aspen Writers’ Foundation. Morning workshops offer in poetry, fiction, nonfiction, memoir, and novel editing – instructed by some of the world’s most renowned writers. Rework your writing, or participate in public discussions on craft and publishing with award-winning faculty. For more information, visit aspenwriters.org.

Snowmass Thursday Night Summer of FREE Music Series – Thursdays at 6 p.m. from June through August at Fanny Hill in Snowmass. Bring a blanket and enjoy the ultimate al fresco experience. Enjoy the open air, grilled foods, beer and wine. Kids will enjoy the Family Fun Zone, that offers everything from face painting to a bouncy house! The 2014 lineup includes:

  • Simplified – June 19
  • Grand Funk Railroad – June 26
  • Wanderlust Spectacular – July 3
  • Big Sam’s Funky Nation – July 10
  • Hot Buttered – July 17

Free Lawn Party – June 19-21 at the Benedict Music Tent. Free music, food, drinks and plenty of dancing. Events begin at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Jazz Aspen Snowmass June 2014 Experience – June 19-28. Four nights of headlining concerts at the Benedict Music Tent as well as an expanded JAS Café Downstairs at The Little Nell. This year’s line-up includes:

  • Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue – June 19 – Benedict Music Tent
  • Diana Krall – June 20 – Benedict Music Tent
  • Steve Winwood – June 21 – Benedict Music Tent
  • Tony Bennett – June 28 – Benedict Music Tent

2014 Aspen Ideas Festival – Scheduled from June 24-July 3. New this year is a program called “Spotlight: Health.” It’s an expansion of the Aspen Ideas Festival, offering participants the opportunity to join dynamic conversations about health. Spotlight is comprised of plenaries, tutorials, and in-town events, but with a singular focus on one topic.

Sunday Classical Music on Aspen Mountain – Sundays at 1 p.m. at the top of the Silver Queen Gondola near Richmond Ridge, from July through August. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy some FREE music! (Purchase of gondola ticket required.)

Jazz Aspen Snowmass Summer Benefit – Wednesday, July 16, hosted by Richard and Kitzia Goodman. Come honor 2014 Philanthropic Honorees Bob and Nancy Magoon. Enjoy an evening of dinner, cocktails, dancing and even a late-night lounge – all to benefit music education and performance. For more info, call 970-920-4996 ext. 15.

Bluegrass Sundays – 12-3 p.m. on Sundays from July 17 through Sept. 2. Top bluegrass musicians performing at 11,000 feet! The lineup varies each week. Located just outside the Sundeck at the top of the Silver Queen Gondola. (Purchase of gondola ticket required.)

Aspen Art Museum ‘ArtCrush’- Friday, Aug. 1. Come honor Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto – the 2014 AAM’s Aspen Award for Art honoree. Also, view his amazing artwork from June through September.

Jazz Aspen Snowmass Labor Day – Want a way to wrap up the summer? This weekend concert series features some of the biggest names in music, performing on the main festival stage in Snowmass. The 2014 lineup includes:
