For the last five years, the staff at Frias Properties of Aspen have been photographing the same two trees on the same day each year – May 18 – to get an idea of how different each Spring can be in the Roaring Fork Valley.
The trees – which are planted on the northwest corner of the City Market grocery store parking lot about a block from the Frias office – show a wide range of colors, or lack of, over the years.
“It’s amazing how different the seasons are,” said marketing associate Kevin Burton, who captured this year’s image.
In both 2007 and 2009, both trees were well in bloom by May 18, displaying a radiant white color. Other years, like this year, are slightly behind that pace.
“They’re not there yet, but they’re coming,” Burton said.
City Market, a local’s favorite, is currently undergoing a major remodel to expand and update the store. Luckily, the trees remained unscaved.
