"An OK Stay at the Independence Square Hotel"
2 of 5
My wife and I spent a Saturday night at this hotel for free, because I had won the night's lodging in a charity raffle. At this price it's hard to complain, but this building has issues that would cause me not to return if I were paying for a room here.
1. The location is great: right in the heart of downtown aspen, 1/2 block from the transit center and a short walk to everything else. However, the lack of a parking facility would be an inconvenience during the busier, more crowded seasons.
2. This is an old building, and its renovation into a hotel-style lodging appears not to have been done thoroughly or thoughtfully.
-- The awkward floor layout of our room was probably the result of an effort to carve the building into the greatest number of units. The amount of really usable floor space makes this small room feel even smaller.
-- We couldn't get the heating system to work. The desk clerk told us that this was a chronic problem, and she provided us with a space heater that warmed the room adequately. However, the building's common areas were extremely cold when we walked to and from the elevator.
3. Our room's bathroom is quite modern, but the system of controls for its shower system is rather complicated for a unit that sees a constant stream of first-time users. Its three sources of water spray and a non-obvious temperature control knob really requires a set of printed instructions to help guests avoid being showered while they are trying to figure out how the whole thing works.
On balance, despite its excellent location, I would not recommend this unit, either as a good travel experience or as a reasonable value for your money.
