Q: What kind of experience should I look for when hiring a babysitter? Is experience really that important? A: aEUoeExperience is essential when hiring a babysitter.A You want to be sure youaEU(tm)re hiring someone who is comfortable around children and knows how to handle any situation that may arise.A Experience babysitting children in the same age group of your own is ideal but not completely necessary.A Any experience spending time with younger siblings, cousins, neighbors etc. is helpful as well.A You want to be sure the babysitter knows how to do basic things such as change diapers, warm up a bottle (if necessary) as well as know the difference between crying for attention and crying due to a real problem, resolving arguments, following the rules, etc.aEU

Q: Should I hire someone based on their special skills or training, or their personality? A: aEUoeBoth!A Their special skills and training will help ensure that your children are safe and in good hands and their personality will help ensure that your children are having fun and make it easier for the babysitter to communicate to you how the day went.A The best of both worlds is not too much to ask.aEU

Q: Should I get references aEU| or go as far as getting a background check? A: aEUoeReferences from employers and other families he/she has babysat for are helpful and usually enough to get a feel for whether or not it may be a good match.A However, be aware of friends of the potential babysitter posing as an aEU~employer.aEU(tm)A Getting a background check is a relatively simple procedure and you can never be too cautious when it comes to your children.aEU

Q: WhataEU(tm)s the going rate for a babysitter these days? Do I pay be the hour? A: aEUoeThe going rate for babysitting in this valley is $25 per hour for two children and goes up with more children.aEU

Q: Should I interview a number of candidates? What should I ask? A: aEUoeYes, you should interview a number of candidates in order to get the best possible match.A Asking about past experience and giving hypothetical situations are good questions to ask.A Availability is important too so that your children have some consistency.aEUA

Q: Is there an appropriate age-range for a babysitter? A: aEUoeIt is common for babysitters to be females aged 18-28, however an older babysitter will often have more experience and/or children of their own.A This depends with who you are most comfortable with.aEU
