Uphilling in Aspen Snowmass: A Guide to Uphill Skiing & Skinning Routes

Morning Cardio + Mountain Adventure
Elevate your winter experience with uphill skiing (also called skinning or uphilling) in Aspen Snowmass. This rewarding sport lets you ascend the alpine terrain on your own power, offering solitude, mountain views, and an unforgettable descent. Below, find everything you need — from passes to gear to route guides and best practices.

1. Passes & Permissions

  • Aspen Snowmass Uphill Access Pass – $69 (flat price regardless of how many uphill days). $10 supports Mountain Rescue Aspen.
  • Uphill passholders must wear a visible uphill strap on body or pack plus show a photo Aspen Card on the outer sleeve while skinning.
  • Passes are available at base-of-mountain ticket offices or via our concierge.

2. Gear Rentals & Shops

Need equipment? We recommend Ute Mountaineer (family-owned since 1977) — offers full uphill packages (skis, skins, poles, boots) for 24 hours or more.

4. Safety, Etiquette & Tips

  • Begin early — many routes have time restrictions (e.g. Aspen Highlands via MGR).
  • Check avalanche conditions and weather forecasts.
  • Carry the “10 essentials” (transceiver, shovel, probe, extra layers, etc.).
  • Travel single-file on narrow trails, announce when passing or descending.
  • Be respectful of others, hikers, or patrollers on route.
