One of the oldest pro-am volleyball tournaments in the United States
Since 1972, the Motherlode Volleyball Classic has been mainstay in Aspen over Labor Day Weekend. The once invitation-only tournament has grown into one of the largest, most competitive pro-am outdoor doubles volleyball events in the country. Volleyball Magazine has called the tournament "the social event of the outdoor volleyball season."
The Motherlode has expanded over the years from a one-day tournament to a five-day event, now with 24 divisions of play, including men's and women's divisions, and seniors divisions and master's divisions for both genders. New in 2021, there are grass triples divisions and sand CoED OPEN 4's.
Over the years, a number of former Olympians and volleyball legends have participated in the tournament. It is also the proving ground for many up-and-coming players.
