Is Aspen Snowmass a good place to ski?

Yes! Aspen is one of the best places to go skiing in the United States. With so many trails to choose from, mountain scenery that will take your breath away, and an incredible apres ski scene, you’ll have the trip of a lifetime in Aspen.

What is there to do in Aspen Snowmass besides skiing?

While skiing is the main attraction for many, there’s still plenty to do here if you aren’t a skier (or if you want to try something different for the day. Many visitors love trying activities like ice skating, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and so much more. Even if you're not into downhill skiing, you can still enjoy the winter wonderland! If you want to stay out of the cold for a bit, the Aspen Art Museum is a great stop, too.

Are there annual winter events to attend in Aspen Snowmass?

Yes. Aspen Snowmass hosts world-class events all winter long, and many guests plan their trip around them. Book early for these, as lodging fills fast:

  • Wintersköl — Second weekend of December. Aspen's traditional "toast to winter," celebrated since 1951, with a torchlight descent, fireworks, snow sculptures, a soup contest and live music across town and all four mountains.
  • Aspen Gay Ski Week — Mid-January. The nation's oldest week-long LGBTQ+ ski celebration, featuring on-mountain gatherings, parties, comedy and the beloved downhill costume competition.
  • X Games Aspen — Late January. The biggest name in action sports takes over Buttermilk for freeski and snowboard finals plus free concerts. Aspen Snowmass is the confirmed host through the 2028-29 season.
  • Toyota U.S. Grand Prix — January or February, dates vary by year. A FIS World Cup stop at Buttermilk where the world's best halfpipe and slopestyle athletes compete, often with Olympic or World Championship berths on the line.
  • Spring Jam — Mid-March through early April. A multi-week spring festival of mountain competitions, sunset skiing, banked slalom racing and extended après parties across all four mountains.
  • Closing Day Parties — Early to mid-April. Each mountain sends off the season in its own style. Buttermilk goes first with Bacon Appreciation Day and a pond skim, then Aspen Highlands brings out the costumes and vintage shades for champagne sprays at Cloud Nine. Snowmass follows with the Elk Camp Snow Beach Party and live DJs, and Aspen Mountain closes last with slush turns, a slip-n-slide and dancing at the Sundeck.
