Aspen Snowmass Vacation Blog

Over the years, Aspen has become a world-class skiing destination for families. The town that at one time was best known for singles, young couples and weekend getaways has evolved into one of the most sought-after family vacation spots in the winter. This week, our blog team presents our Tips for Taking Kids to Aspen for a Ski Vacation. We’ll give some useful information to assist you in planning your perfect family ski vacation, and we’ll even share some “local” tips to help save you money.

First, you’ll need to plan your dates. “Peak” season times such as Thanksgiving (opening weekend), Christmas/New Year, Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day can command a premium rate.  If you’re looking to save money, choose dates that are during “low” ski season. More affordable rates can be found in early December, February, March and April than the “peak” season times listed above. If your timeframe is more open, a Frias vacation specialist can assist you in choosing the best rate depending on your budget. Keep in mind that many units have minimum-night stays, but during “low” season the minimums can be as few as 3-4 nights. "Low" season can often mean there are fewer people on the slopes. If you're a first-time or beginner skier, keep that in mind.

Next, you’ll need to decide where you want to stay. A common misconception is that there is no affordable lodging close to Aspen Mountain. Frias Properties has more than 200 condominiums available in the downtown Aspen core area. Lodging options range from studio apartments and lodge rooms to 7-bedroom luxury private homes. Many of these properties are within walking distance to the Silver Queen Gondola in downtown Aspen. A Frias vacation specialist can walk you through all of the available options, and the company’s entire inventory is available to view and book online at FriasProperties.com.

Some of the more sought-after locations for families close to downtown include the Alpenblick, Chateau Chaumont, Chateau Dumont, Fasching Haus, Fifth Avenue and Silverglo. The Independence Square, another popular choice, offers lodge rooms right on the downtown mall, one block from the gondola. For families seeking a luxury Aspen experience, take a closer look at the Hyatt Grand Aspen and St. Regis Residence Club, both only steps away from downtown.

Follow up your planning by contacting our concierge desk. The Frias concierge desk can be a valuable resource during your visit. The concierge can assist with dinner reservations, lift ticket purchasing, ski rental and delivery, ski lessons, baby-sitters, transportation and more. Be sure to reach out to the concierge desk before your arrival. Our concierge can help you save money on lift tickets and make sure you and your family are fully prepared for your mountain adventure.

Here are a few more tips for families:

  • Ask a vacation specialist about our complexes with a heated outdoor pool or hot tub. Kids love the pool, and parents love hot tubs!
  • Book your flight directly into Aspen. It’s a short flight from Denver (28 minutes), which is a lot better than a 4-5 hour drive depending on weather.
  • Guests who book with Frias Properties receive complimentary transportation to and from the Aspen airport. It’s free!
  • Plan on walking around a lot if you stay near downtown. You’ll only need transportation if you plan on visiting Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, Snowmass, Woody Creek or other downvalley locations. For that, be sure to look into Aspen’s bus system, RFTA. The main RFTA bus terminal is located downtown, and there are bus stops all over town. Most bus transportation is free of charge, unless you travel further downvalley.
  • All Frias guests receive complimentary passes to a local health and fitness facility. Sign up for the package with passes to the Aspen Recreation Center and the Red Brick Center. Kids of all ages will love the lazy river, climbing wall and other family-friendly features. It’s free for the duration of your stay.
