What are the Maroon Bells?

Maroon Bells is one of the most famous sites in Colorado. These distinctly bell-shaped, wine-colored peaks are not only gorgeous but also a great place to hike near Aspen Snowmass.
Is Maroon Bells a 14er?
Yes! There are several 14ers near Aspen Snowmass, and Maroon Bells just happens to be one of them. Challenge yourself when you take it on!
How Can We Access Maroon Bells?
During normal summers, car traffic is limited to protect the treasured ecosystem, and visitors can access the Maroon Bells Scenic Area by bus during peak hours (8 a.m. – 5 p.m.) or by car early in the morning and in the evening (before 7:30 a.m. and after 5 p.m.).
Reservations are required to access the Maroon Bells Scenic Area. You can reserve a ticket on the shuttle, or pay for a parking pass.
Can You Access Maroon Bells Without A Reservation?
Typically, no. There are some workarounds to visitng Maroon Bells without a reservation that we’ll explore in this piece, but honestly your best bet is to make a reservation online. It’ll save you much stress and hassle!
Reservations opened for the currrent summer season on May 15th, 2025, and are required through October 31st, 2025. Don’t worry! If you did not secure your reservation and they are sold out, there are other ways to access the Maroon Bells.

While reservations may be sold out now, capacity restrictions change often. If local officials increase the Maroon Creek bus's capacity, more tickets may become available. Check the reservation site frequently!
Just Show Up!
Hey, if you’re feeling lucky, you can always just show up to Maroon Bells. If a ticket holder does not arrive for their assigned departure time, additional tickets will be available to purchase at the RFTA office at Aspen Highlands. Our concierge advised many guests to try their luck at the on-site ticket window, and most were able to find a seat on the Maroon Bells bus.
Rent a Bike
Maroon Creek Road is easy to access from town, and it’s the perfect route for biking. You can ride through the forest service gate and up the grade of the Bells, passing some dramatic views on your way to the main attraction. Push yourself on a regular bicycle, or rent an e-bike to have a bit of a boost!

Sign Up For a Downhill Bike Tour
Blazing Adventures offers downhill bike tours that start at the Maroon Bells scenic area and descend Maroon Creek Road back to town. This outfitter carries a special permit that allows them to take vans and bike trailers to the coveted area.
You'll have time to scope out Maroon Lake, snap a few pictures, and saddle up. The ride down is incredibly picturesque and includes a stop at the East Maroon Portal, another great photo opp.
Does Maroon Bells Allow Commercial Drop-Offs This Year?
No! Please note that commercial drop-offs will not be permitted this summer. That means you won't be able to take a taxi, ride share, or limo up to the Maroon Bells.
Can A Friend Drop Us Off at Maroon Bells?
Private vehicle drop-offs are permitted before 8 AM and after 5 PM. A $10 fee is required at the Welcome Center Entrance Self-Pay Station!
