Aspen Snowmass Vacation Blog

In February, we start to turn the winter corner embracing longer days, bluer skies, and softer snow.  Post X-Games, Aspen readies for the energy that frequents town for President’s Day weekend and then we brace for the Spring Break crescendo welcoming families and students from all over the country.  At Frias Properties, our staff is enjoying the stellar ski season, entertaining guests, and participating in all the special events that make Aspen the most desirable ski destination in the world.

Spring Skiing: Taking a Closer Look

So why does everyone get so excited about “spring skiing”?  Even within a group of ski enthusiasts, there is a tribe who shudders from the cold.  Let’s face it, skiing with mounds of layers, cold hands, and 10 numb toes does not make for the best experience.  Mid to late February the temps start to increase, the heavy snow storms have tempered, and the

The snow becomes more packed offering less resistance and making it easier to navigate for skiers and snowboarders.  The sun also tends to shine just a little bit more, providing extra warmth and opportunities to discover new activities on and off the mountain.

On-Mountain Activities in the Spring

Whether you are a beginner or expert skier or snowboarder, Aspen is home to outstanding snow conditions in February and March. There is groomed terrain perfect for beginners and those looking to cruise the slopes.  With historically great packed snow, this is the time to ski the bumps and steeps on all four mountains — Aspen, Aspen Highlands, Snowmass, and Buttermilk.

As you plan your spring break in Aspen consider a few of these on-mountain activities:

  • Snow Tubing & Coaster Ride — An important note, there is more to do than skiing and snowboarding on Snowmass Mountain. There are plenty of activities to get the blood pumping that won’t require rented equipment. As the home of the Breathtaker Alpine Coaster found at Elk Camp along with snow tubing, visitors can increase the thrill factor of their stay with these alternative winter activities.

  • ACES Snowshoe Tours — ACES offers daily snowshoe tours on Aspen and Snowmass mountains.  Guided by an ACES naturalist, enjoy stunning views while learning about winter wildlife, tracking, mountain ecology, avalanches, winter habitats, and more.

  • Hike or Uphill Tiehack on Buttermilk Mountain - A local haunt and hidden gem of Aspen, Tiehack offers a lung-busting hike or uphill experience.  Frequented in the wee morning hours by Aspen’s fittest athletes, the views atop Buttermilk are worth the cardiovascular effort.  Reward your ambition with a delicious breakfast or lunch at The Cliffhouse.

Off-Mountain Spring Activities

There is more to Aspen than skiing and snowboarding. This is especially true during spring break in Aspen. From snowmobiling and snow biking to shopping and supporting the arts, there is so much to see and do in Aspen.

Hang up those skies and put the snowboard on the wall wrack for these off-mountain spring activities:

  • Winter Fly Fishing — Did you know that Aspen is known as a world-class location for fly fishing? You do now! Visitors enjoy the pastime all year long, but it’s the spring months that boast the best catches. Cast your line into the slow-moving, clear waters of the Frying Pan or Roaring Fork Rivers to try your luck at the large Rainbow (and sometimes Brown) Trout found there. Our concierge service can help get you set up for this experience whenever you're ready.

  • Ice Skating — A visit to Aspen isn't complete without a few laps at the ice skating rink. Aspen has three rinks to choose from making this compulsory springtime activity easy to enjoy. Find the Silver Circle rink downtown, plus two indoor rinks: the Lewis Ice Arena located inside the Aspen Recreation Center (ARC) and the Aspen Ice Garden located in the Lift1A neighborhood.

  • Walking Tours & Museums — If the snow isn't your forte, worry not. There are plenty of indoor alternatives to enjoy including an array of museums. The Aspen Art Museum is conveniently located downtown and is free to enter for all guests. As an architectural vision, this museum isn’t like any other you’ll visit. If the temperatures outside aren’t too much of a deterrent, join a historical walking tour and educate yourself on the brilliant history of Aspen.  P.S. On Saturdays, enjoy the weekly Apres Party on the Aspen Art Museum rooftop featuring cocktails from the Slippery Slope, snacks from the new Rooftop Cafe and beats from this season’s resident DJ: Golden.
